A new temporary Parent visa has been launched in Australia, allowing Australian citizens and permanent residents to reunite with their parents living abroad.
The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870) will also help parents reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia, and stay with them for a period of 5 years.
Parents who will be considered eligible for this visa will be limited to the biological, adoptive, or step-parents of the sponsor, who must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
Applicants can lodge their respective visa applications online via ImmiAccount, with 15,000 visas to be made available to parents every program year (July 01 to June 30).
Parents arriving in Australia will generally have no working rights on their visa and will have to exit the country upon the expiration of their visa. However, they can reapply for the visa after spending 90 days outside Australia.
Eligibility factors for the sponsor include:
-
Being an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen
-
Being a biological, adopted or stepchild of the parent they want to sponsor
-
Being at least 18 years old
-
Meeting sponsorship obligations
-
Having a minimum household income threshold
-
Having no outstanding debts to the Commonwealth or public health debts.
