Morrison says skilled migrants best for country

January 03, 2014, IMMIGRATION Minister Scott Morrison says the government is right to prioritize skilled migration as new parliamentary research shows the family stream is becoming an increasingly small component of the migration program. A new analysis of trends in the family migration scheme, which is designed to reunite immediate family members of Australian citizens or permanent residents, shows that as a proportion of the nation's annual migrant intake, it has shrunk to about half of what it was in 1987-88, having been eclipsed by a steady growth in skilled migration.
