Canada has launched six new permanent residency pathways for temporary residents in the country to obtain permanent resident status.
Health care workers, non-health care workers and international graduates can apply for permanent residency in Canada through these newly launched pathways.
All applicants must be in Canada and be employed to be eligible for applying for permanent residency in Canada through the new streams.
Of the six new permanent residency pathways announced, health care workers, non-health care workers and international graduates can each apply through two dedicated streams – one for French speaking applicants and one for non-French speaking candidates.
For the non-French speaking streams, up to 90,000 applicants will be able to obtain permanent resident status in Canada. However, no such caps have been announced for the French speaking streams.
The announcement of the new streams comes after Canada’s Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino discussed opening new PR pathways for temporary residents in Canada.
Speaking on the opening of the new streams, Mr Mendicino said that the pandemic has highlighted the importance of essential workers, and that the new pathways are designed to recognize their key roles in Canada’s economic recovery.
He also said that Canada’s message to temporary residents is simple – set down roots in the country and help Canada be even better.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) also said that the new pathways to permanent residency in Canada recognize the importance of educated and experienced workers as Canada looks to speed up its economic recovery following the coronavirus pandemic.

The new pathways will be open for applications until November 5, or until all the intake caps are filled up.
The streams are created as Canada works on welcoming more than 400,000 new permanent residents in 2021 as part of its new Immigration Levels Plan, which outlined Canada’s ambition of inviting 1.2 million new permanent residents to the country by 2023.
