Coalition members of Australia’s parliamentary committee have urged the government to fast track the return of skilled migrants to Australia.
The government-dominated committee said this approach could help fill more than 50,000 job vacancies that are currently besetting regional Australia.
According to the coalition committee, the Australian government should be working on reserving seats for skilled migrants on flights to Australia.
Moreover, skilled migrants travelling to Australia should be given dedicated places in quarantine facilities upon their arrival in the country.
Ever since Australia’s borders were closed for international migration to combat the coronavirus outbreak, a lack of skilled migration to Australia has resulted in the country suffering from skilled worker shortages.
Although the Australian federal government introduced incentives for people to relocate to the country’s regions and territories, the approach has been largely unsuccessful.
As a result, more than 50,000 job vacancies have accumulated in Australian regions and territories, which are in need of being filled.
Australia, being such a vast country with several populous regions and territories, are always on the lookout for talented and qualified skilled migrants who can join the country’s workforce and plug the gaps left by a dearth of suitably skilled local workers.
In addition to working on hastening the return of skilled migrants to Australia, the coalition committee also urged the government to consider overhauling the priority occupations for skilled migration to Australia.
In the occupations overhaul, foreign workers belonging to engineering, health, hospitality, manufacturing and mechanics disciplines – among others – should be given priority for skilled migration to Australia, said the coalition committee.
